From Getting Inspired to Travel Planning

Sometimes it does not take much to inspire us to visit a place. A recommendation from a friend, a beautiful photograph or even a film can influence our decision to include a certain destination on our travel list. In my case it was one Spanish film, which was set in a city with amazing old town and spectacular backdrop of snowy mountains that piqued my interest in Segovia. The plot was average but this incredible location got me thinking and planning.

My trip to Madrid was a perfect occasion to stop by Segovia. The city is situated northwest of the capital. I had also finally a chance to explore Castile and León. That central region of Spain, was still unknown to me and I could benefit from convenient and fast train connections.

Magnificent Aqueduct of Segovia

Although the views of Sierra Guadarrama brought me to the city it was a magnificent aqueduct with more than 160 arches that completely stole my heart. It is one of the best-preserved Roman structures on the Iberian Peninsula. Certainly the symbol of the city too. Its special status does not come as a surprise as I am sure that its monumental size. It actually reaches a height of 28.5 meters. Since it’s also centrally located it makes a true highlight for any visitor.

There is more to Segovia than just a magnificent aqueduct. Charming streets of the old town and Jewish quarter as well as a rich architectural legacy add to city’s impressive offering. The Cathedral, medieval walls and the Alcázar are among city’s major structures and finest examples.

I not only recommend visiting the Alcazar of Segovia, the royal palace and fortress, but also climbing the Tower of John II of Castile. It is worth going up the small staircase to admire the views. They are spectacular and so is Segovia! Definitely a must visit when exploring this part of Spain.
