The Land of Wine and Olives

A weekend away from Barcelona? Walking and hiking involved? I was in as soon as I heard about this idea. A great place that was considered as our out-of-town destination, a picturesque county of Priorat also sounded amazing. It is based in the province of Tarragona that I already had a chance to visit in March so not very far from Barcelona but far enough to feel like a holiday break.

Once three busy ladies were involved it took some time to agree on a suitable weekend that would work for all of us but we managed in the end. Most importantly the dates we picked were also convenient for Aleksandra’s friend, who kindly let us stay in his house in Marçà. Luckily Priotat is easily accessible by train. With Marçà-Falset station situated only a short walk away from the village it was not a problem to find our way even fairly late on Friday night.

Exploring Priorat

Priorat is famous for its wine. The views of the vineyards can certainly be a proof that viticulture is at its heart. For a long time the areas such as Tarragona and Priorat have been the important centers of agricultural activity in Catalonia. They were focusing also on the production of olives, grains and other produce like almonds or hazelnuts. I was given a bottle of a local olive oil as a present and I must say that it was superb. I used this liquid gold whenever I make a salad.

I was really impressed with a variety of different walking routes available in Priorat and also how well they are set up. It is worth knowing that the Tourist Information Office in Falset offers great materials. Their website can be extremely helpful for anyone who wants to plan beforehand. The route that I picked with my friends took us from Marçà to Capçanes. We want via an incredible ravine, along dry river bed and the fields with old farmhouses. It was easy, enjoyable and I would recommend it. Maybe you should try during the grape harvest period? It must be beautiful!

  1. Watch out for those friends lost in tunnel! You never know if you’d need to deal with Catalan-only-speaking Mossos ;)
